Last Thursday, The Rotary Club of Norristown was honored to have as its guest speaker, Montgomery County Commissioner,Thomas DiBello. Tom joined the Commission in 2024. He explained the 85 to 90% of the work they do is non-political, and the three commissioners strive to work together to solve the big issues facing the county.
Homelessness is one of the biggest issues they have taken on. There are always between 500 and 600 people living on the streets of Montgomery County, and the commissioners have chosen to address the problem by providing services that help the homeless get back on their feet and become more independent of government. This approach has shown promise over the old methods of just providing shelters . There are many encampments in the county with the majority in Pottstown, Lansdale , and Norristown and these locations will be featuring the centers for assistance and education. The centers have been created at a cost of $2 million each. The commissioners have tried to get state help, but are, for the most part, doing it themselves.
The county is in the planning stages of creating a Crisis Center in King of Prussia which will help alleviate the pressure placed on local hospitals for emergency services, especially in high crime areas.
The county Commerce Department is working to exchange the county's image as a homeless center, into one of an upcoming business center, stressing our colleges, and an educated population, hoping to attract manufacturing, tech engineering, medical, and bio-tech industries.
Commissioner DiBello spent considerable time addressing the issue of data centers and the many applications that are being processed in the county. He stated that the commissioners have no real authority over the granting of permits for these facilities, but do work with the local communities in helping form ordinances to control their deployment. He stated that present laws require power companies to accommodate all present and future business, so issues can become complicated. Tom warned , that if individuals are interested in apposing these facilities, they had better inform themselves completely on zoning laws and all the area regulations, and not just protest.
