I am writing as a fellow Rotarian to remind us all that without each other, this club would not exist. Friendship is a cornerstone of Rotary.
Due to the Covid 19 virus, our club has had to adjust to an online-only meeting through Zoom at the present time. These are REAL meetings following a real agenda. May I be blunt…gracious… but blunt, apart from a health-related, work-related, or family-related issue, we should all seek to make every meeting to support the Rotary Club of Norristown via computer or phone. Yes, we are eagerly anticipating the time when we can indeed get back to In-Person meetings but for now, we are relegated to weekly Zoom meetings. Having you there IS bringing back some of the pre-covid normalcy.
When we joined the club, as part of our induction, we were reminded that our motto is “service above self” as serving others is our primary role as Rotarians. Among the requirement that we committed to were certain responsibilities where it was stated that “Membership in the club bears certain responsibilities. And requires that you agree to the following: • Attend club meetings on a regular basis and wear your pin (daily).” Along with this particular responsibility were others and we were all asked at the end, “Do you understand and commit to these responsibilities?” To which we all affirmed in the positive.
Our members’ weekly participation provides the maximum benefit to all of us for many reasons, so let me take time to name a few. First, Rotary does have an attendance requirement of at least 50%, which we want to honor! Second, we all need this connection as members of the Rotary Club of Norristown, we were created to be in relationship! Third, we want to visibly express our thankfulness to all the work that goes into scheduling the programs through the Program chairperson, Sunanda Charles, with the help of all the members. Finally, at the present time, it is easily accessible via Zoom (whether that is through the video application or by phone).
After all, we have made a financial commitment to this club beginning with the paying of our semi-annual dues on time, through our giving to the Rotary Foundation, through our giving of finances and time to various local service projects (which, when attended, is another way to meet the attendance requirement).
With the ease of Zoom and/or a phone, it is easy to exceed the minimum 50% attendance requirement. One never knows where the opportunity to meet new Rotarians and take part in creating positive change in our communities will lead.
Yours in Rotary Service,
Scott Wright,
President-Elect 2020-21
NOTICE- We are looking for members to serve on the Nominations Committee for the upcoming year. Please respond to Louise if you can serve on this important task.
Hi Folks,
Please read below about a GREAT opportunity for Rotarians of Montgomery County to volunteer to help our county with Vaccination sites that are being set up...
Please send out to all the Rotarians in your club as soon as possible. For those club members that want to assist our county with vaccination sites, have them sign into the link below for registering with the Montgomery County Medical Reserve Corps.
Our public health officials are reaching out... let's show them that Rotarians are #PeopleofAction !
We appreciate our Rotarian in Bucks County, Carol Ferguson for passing this on to us. Carol is an active Rotarian, a polio survivor and a member, Bucks County Immunization Coalition.
Be Well and Be Safe

Hi Ron.
I pray you are well.
I realized that many of your Clubs are in both Bucks and Montgomery Counties.
Here's something we can all be a part of -
The Bucks and Montgomery County Departments of Health has asked for our help.
In the very near future, our Counties will be opening mass Vaccination sites. They can't do this alone.
They need 300 volunteers (in each county) to make it happen. You may have seen in the paper and elsewhere that they are "only" looking for health care professionals. That is NOT the case.
To Volunteer in Bucks County:
Please fill out this questionnaire to register as a volunteer as soon as possible. Note: Safety is their first priority. Every volunteer is being vetted so you will not hear back re: specific job opportunities right away.
Feel free to share this information with your Bucks County family and friends - but, please DO NOT post on Social Media.
To Volunteer in Montgomery County:
We would be happy to have you join the Montgomery County Medical Reserve Corps (MRC). Both medical and non-medical volunteers can serve through the MRC for Montgomery County’s COVID volunteer response. To register for the MRC, go to the ServPA website, https://serv.pa.gov
Once your profile is complete, you will receive a notification that your ServPA registration is complete. The Montgomery County MRC has a COVID-19 task force group that MRC members will join to help support with COVID-19 requests. Being a part of the MRC COVID-19 task force group will allow all members to receive COVID-19 volunteer specific requests.
In December, Rotary International published a "Call to Action" regarding vaccines. This is the perfect opportunity to serve.
Let's do what WE can to help our Departments of Health get these Vaccination Centers open.
I've had the opportunity to speak to a few of your Clubs and it's been such fun. Given this call to action, we (PA Polio Survivors Network) would love the opportunity to speak to more of your Clubs re: Vaccines Work! Rotary's Focus on Disease Prevention.
Yours in service,
Carol Ferguson,

LOOKING FOR THE CLUB CALENDAR?
Dave Shoemaker has made it easy to find
I have switched the calendar page in our website to show the google calendar for "norristownrotary.org".
There has been some confusion over calendars in the past. From now on, the google calendar is the only one. I have told Sunanda about the change. She only needs to edit one calendar. ( although the future is rather empty at the moment, different issue ).
No one is required to login to clubrunner to see this. They just search for or go to "norristownrotary.org" and click on the calendar page. Editing the thing requires logging into the club's google account.

LAST WEEK
Thursday Feb. 4 meeting featured Aaron Muderick of CRAZY AARON'S THINKING PUTTY, who told us about his wildly successful creation of 'thinking putty'. Aaron, who was born and raised in Havertown, worked in Silicon Valley for some time, consulted, came up with the idea of creating a more interesting, fun, challenging, and educational form of silly putty. He developed a putty that lasted longer, was colourful, and had many different qualities that led kids to be more creative and enjoy playing with it. Thus the term 'thinking putty'. The company was a family operation for a few years, but grew with world wide recognition, to a sizeable operation, outgrowing its facilities in Phoenixville, and setting up shop in Norristown. They partnered with 5 Saints Distilling for help in handling chemicals, and built the business by using area persons with disabilities to manufacture the products.
COVID brought operations to a halt, and Aaron looked to use his facilities to produce hand sanitizer, which was in short supply. As major suppliers got caught up in production, he developed a sanitizer targeted for kids, which has become quite popular.
We thank Aaron for sharing his story with us, and wish him success in the future with this Norristown produced products.
Stan Huskey tells us the reconditioned Elmwood Park Zoo trolley is almost ready to pickup and move it to the Zoo. He will be driving it home. It will connect the Zoo with the Centre Theater downtown on Dekalb St. as well as several other popular stops, coming in 2021. In order to expedite completion, the newest plan converted the trolley to a road wheeled vehicle initially, this will allow some flexibility in making various stops. Ultimately, we hear it will ride on the CSX rails near the Zoom. It's a pretty bright red. Maybe they will name it? Wouldn't something like the 'Norristown Eagle' sound awesome ?
