Pedals for Progress Update

The club was contacted by Plymouth Whitemarsh police recently. They would like to donate about 30 bicycles kept at their facility over the past few years, which were found, recovered from a crime etc.  They agreed to deliver them to the club at our 'Bike Trailer' at a in a few weeks.  We will plan a club project to receive them at GJ Sayres, process some of them and transfer them all from the van to the trailer.

See Mark for more details if you would like to help.

                      LOOKING FOR THE CLUB CALENDAR?
Dave Shoemaker has made it easy to find

I have switched the calendar page in our website to show the google calendar for "norristownrotary.org".

There has been some confusion over calendars in the past. From now on, the google calendar is the only one. I have told Sunanda about the change. She only needs to edit one calendar.  ( although the future is rather empty at the moment, different issue ).

No one is required to login to clubrunner to see this. They just search for or go to "norristownrotary.org" and click on the calendar page. Editing the thing requires logging into the club's google account.

New Program - Code Blue Shelter Update
The last year has certainly been one of crisis, but crisis sometimes presents more opportunities to grow and create impact.  Due to the pandemic, the county shelters had to operate below their normal capacity, and there was a critical lack of shelter beds. We resumed our conversations with the First Presbyterian Church regarding a Winter Shelter, for which we have been formulating plans since 2019. The pandemic presented a perfect opportunity to partner with our neighbors, and in January this year, we opened our Code Blue Shelter at the First Presbyterian Church at Norristown.

With a combination of staff and volunteers, we successfully ran the shelter for 30 plus nights. After going through an appeal process, we were granted approval by a unanimous vote of the Zoning Hearing Board on March 23rd. We are grateful to all our volunteers, staff, and especially to the leadership at the First Presbyterian Church at Norristown for coming together in a time of crisis and making it possible to provide more people a safe and warm place to sleep.

The Hospitality Center will now be a provider of shelter during Code Blue Nights in Montgomery County. What a great addition to much-needed resources in Norristown. This would not have been possible without the generous support of our donor who wishes to remain anonymous and who donated $15,000 to the Code Blue Shelter Operations. We are grateful for everyone that helped us directly and indirectly. We would like to acknowledge Your Way Home, Laurel House, CHOC, Einstein Montgomery Hospital, Al's Heart in Pottstown, Ann's Heart in Phoenixville, The Interfaith Group, and our wonderful partners in this vital work, the First Presbyterian Church at Norristown for your valuable support. Onwards!!!!

NORRISTOWN — With any luck, Elmwood Park visitors should be enjoying a nice picnic lunch under the roof of a new pavilion this summer.

While the baseball field restoration and other repairs resulting from last summer’s flood are underway, many may have noticed that replacement of the beloved Elmwood Park pavilion has stalled, with little remaining of the old pavilion, which was dismantled earlier this year.

The pavilion, a longtime gathering spot for family celebrations, sustained massive damage from fallen trees during last year’s storm.

“Work has been ongoing to get the fields repaired and fix the Rec Center and people will see that the pavilion has been taken down,” noted the Municipality’s Information Officer Kevin Tustin, who explained that Public Works had reported that it was cheaper for the municipality to just remove the structure instead of seeking a contractor to repair it.

“The pavilion project was put out to bid earlier this year but nobody actually bid on the project, so while the fields are getting cleaned up and the Rec Center is being renovated, that was the only thing that no one bid on,” he added.

Tustin didn’t know why the project failed to draw any interest from contractors.

“It’s unfortunate though. We are expected to put a bid out at the end of the month for a pre-fab structure, so whenever someone  bids on that project and council awards that bid it should be pretty easy to put that together and back in the park,” Tustin said.

The job of replacing the floor of the Recreation Center's lower basement was awarded to Park Inc. DBA Klinghoffer Carpet in the amount of $69,900, with a projected completion date of May 1. The drywall and painting contract was awarded to Park O'Rourke Associates for $100,276, also to be completed by May 1.

The rehab of the Latshaw McCarthy baseball field began at the end of March with a timeline of opening around May 1, while the rehab of the Little League Fields is expected to begin in mid to late April and also be finished by May 1.

“We will be rebuilding the infield, the bullpens, part of the outfield fencing including windscreens, and foul ball polls,” Tustin noted.

The area known as the “Tot Lot” will be upgraded with rebuilt fencing around the toddler playground.

“I know people were wishing that the cleanup happened a lot sooner but we’re definitely getting things ready for the summer,” Tustin said.

Meanwhile, the Recreation Center is now open Monday, Wednesday and Friday 1 to 8 p.m.;  Tuesday and Thursday, 1 to 6 p.m. and Saturday 1 to 3 p.m.

“We are renting our upstairs classrooms and our gymnasium at this time only,” Tustin noted.
