At our October 1 meeting, the Club was entertained by Keith McLennan, the V P of Historical Trappe, who enlightened us on all the activities surrounding the history of the Trappe area. His organization highlights the rich history of Trappe during the formation of the country and the Revolutionary War, when soldiers camped after the Battle of Brandywine. He spoke about the contributions of Henry Muhlenberg and his family in the Lutheran establishment in the area. Family members were also generals in the army, and in the case of his son Frederick, the first speaker of the U.S. House of Representatives.
The Historic Trappe group features three restored buildings that tell the story of its history. Dewees Tavern , the Muhlenberg House, and the Speaker's House are full of artifacts and furniture from the era, and welcome visitors with tours that can be scheduled ahead of time. Each building presents the rich German history of the area including a German translation of the Declaration of Independence.
The Historical Trappe organization has worked with Ursinus College in presenting several symposium events and holds several special day gatherings throughout the year to which the public is encouraged to attend. The events range from their upcoming Harvest Fair on Oct. 10, to Kids Day ,Christmas specials , Halloween cemetery event, and their big fundraiser October. 25.
Their main museum is in the Dewees Tavern, at the corner of 113 and Ridge Pike. To learn more about the Trappe events, visit their website at Historictrappe.org
