Last week, BRAY RAUHAUSER, Executive Director of the Historical Society of Montgomery County visited or club and told us of the working of the society and gave a few interesting examples of what he has experienced during his work there. The Society, which was formed in 1881, is dedicated to interact with the public and make available to them, and interpret their meaning, documents concerning the history of Montgomery County. They keep and preserve many types of documents and artifacts such as wills, deeds, newspapers, and many other items of interest.
Bray told us of the many fascinating special events they hold, centering on varied aspects of county history. (two examples are shown below).
He related an article that he uncovered concerning a big prize fight held in Whitepain in 1864 featuring the famous Patsy Marley, in a match against all comers. (he fought 70 rounds that day) The fight drew world wide attention doe to the size of the purse, and people came from miles around to witness the event, estimated 3000 spectators.
