Club News This Week

LAST WEEK

DAVE SHOEMAKER was the fill-in speaker last week giving us an overview of the several ways our club interacts and helps the Norristown Area School District. He pointed out that we had historically given support to three schools districts but in the last couple of years we have dedicated resources to the NASD. There are 5 areas that benefit the school district: 1- our Spanish / English dictionary project where the club gives every third grader in the school district, one of these dictionaries. It is one of our most popular and largest community contact program ; 2- Camp NEIDIG where we send kids to a week long character and team building camp created by out Rotary District ; 3- Our scholarship program, which has moved from a loan / scholarship to strictly a scholarship program. Students selected by the school district receive funds , which are sent directly to their chosen colleges, to defray the ever rising cost of higher education ; 4- STEMYEA , another Rotary district program, of which we are a charter member, that supports learning in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math. We just last wear put together a grant for the Eisenhower school for robotics under the STEMYEA program ; 5- Student Achievement Program where we recognize students throughout the year, for their excellence in academics, sports, community service, and leadership.

So , as Dave pointed out, we as a club do much in support of our local school district. Remember that these programs can only survive with your participation.

Thank You Dave

Crowd at Art in the Park
Art in the Park Expo

Visitor turnout at the 'Art in the Park' expo at the Zoo on Saturday was very good and a great opportunity for the club, thanks to Expressive Path. These community shows are important as they raise Rotary awareness and provide a good public understanding of Rotary. They also serve as an opportunity to connect directly with the community and network.  Our tent was located in a great spot on the midway near the Red Panda (who stole the show).  The Pancake Breakfast was promoted and some postcards were distributed.  Many people also took bicycle donation info cards. Great weather.

Hopefully we can get better turnout in future events so that we can circulate among the vendors, network and hand out membership flyers.

EACH ONE, BRING ONE Member Campaign Underway
EACH ONE, BRING ONE

President Sunanda has officially kicked off the  'Each One, Bring One'  member campaign.

Rotary Clubs need to continue to grow in order to enhance our ability to dedicate resources to solving a community or global issue.

This year, President Sunanda is asking every Club member to bring a visitor, spouse, family, friend or acquaintance to our meeting and introduce them to Rotary.

If everyone brought a guest it would double our meeting size, and if half of the visitors discovered Rotary and became a member, the club would grow by 50%.

Please think about it this week and identify someone you would like to introduce to Rotary. Bring them to a meeting and tell them why you joined.

Who will you bring ?

Congratulations Jim Williams
CONGRATULATIONS JIM WILLIAMS

Jim is headed to Naples, Italy on Tuesday.  As most of you know, Jim played in the Italian Pro Basketball League.  The Mayor of Naples has invited Jim as he will be making Jim an honorary citizen of the city.  Congratulations Jim, we are very proud of you and everything you have done for the sport of basketball.

- USEFUL TIPS -

Technical Tip: Add a simple Club Calendar view  to your Phone
Technical Tip: Add the Club's calendar to your phone

It's easy to add this calendar view to your phone and access a simple calendar list view with one tap.

The calendar resides at this URL address, if you tap on the link below on your phone, you'll see the calendar.

You can then add it to your phone's Home screen.

(On the iPhone select the SHARE symbol [see red arrow], then scroll down and select 'Add to Home Screen')

Technical Tip: Keep my gmail out of promotions
        But, It's NOT Spam.

Is some of your expected gmail missing from the Inbox?

Aside from regular spam filtering, sometimes Google also takes  a guess at your incoming gmail and pre-categorizes it in order to cut down on spam. The Tabs 'Social' and 'Promotions' capture some of your email instead.
Well, Google doesn't always get it right.

Fortunately, even though that is the default setting, you can change the setting and control your pre-categorization completely and get all your mail back in the old inbox.
YOU can select select the problem email in 'Promotions' and drag it to the inbox,  OR....
A more reliable way is to control your own categories  or  simply have none at all.  If you uncheck the 'Social" and 'Promotions' categories in settings, your future email will not appear in those virtual folders but rather in your old inbox as expected.

Here's what you do to fix it.
Go to your inbox settings link. https://mail.google.com/mail/u/0/#settings/inbox
Uncheck the boxes 'Social' and 'Promotions', AND CLICK SAVE
From now on it will appear in the old inbox as expected.
